Stork Island is considered a "heavenly treasure" of the people of
Tien Nong commune (Trieu Son district), a home to thousands of different
birds. With its rare natural beauty and located next to the sacred Van Linh
temple, this place has potential for tourism development.
According to the elders in the village, no one knows when the Stork Island
was formed or when the storks came to live here. They only see that every
early morning or late afternoon, the image of white storks soaring in the
sky and then finding shelter on the island has become familiar in daily
life. Thus, year after year, birds and storks gather together. Even when
facing fierce storms and threats to their lives, they still cling to survive
and develop. The storks do not destroy crops, but on the contrary, they
always diligently search for insects and pests that harm rice and vegetables
in the fields. Therefore, for the people of Tien Nong, the Stork Island has
long been a source of pride, a "relic" that needs to be protected and
preserved.
It is called Stork Island because the storks' habitat is located in a large
lake (locals call it Nga Lake), surrounded by a deep moat, on the island are
thousands of dense bamboo trees, this is the ideal shelter for the storks
after a hard day of foraging. With an area of about 3 hectares, of which
nearly 2 hectares are surrounded by lake water, on this stork island, not
only do storks live but it is also home to many species of birds such as:
herons, mallards, teals, cuckoos, plovers, wild pigeons and especially
pelicans... Every day, from about 5pm onwards, thousands of birds and storks
go foraging from all directions to the island to take shelter, creating a
white image in the sky, the sound of their flock calls resounds, making the
countryside space noisy and joyful...
The "strangeness" of the Stork Island has made some Tien Nong residents want
to learn and “explore”. Mr. Dao Huu Hong, a resident living near the Stork
Island and a rare person in the commune who studies and researches birds and
storks, said: “According to a study, the Stork Island has 6 orders, 10
families with 17 species... In addition to white storks, there are also
snail storks (popular name) weighing about 1kg/bird, this type often catches
snails to eat around the lake. The most crowded time on the Stork Island is
around August when the flocks of birds migrate to avoid the winter, at this
time thousands of birds fly across the sky. From around March to May is the
time when birds and storks breed, after the breeding period the flock of
storks begin a new migration journey. The Stork Island is a place where
"good land, birds live", so over the years more and more birds and storks
come to live”.
With its rare natural beauty, in 1994, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa
province recognized the Stork Island complex, Van Palace and Hoa Long Pagoda
(in Trieu Son) as provincial historical relics. Visitors who want to explore
stork island should go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when
birds and storks gather the most on the island and need to prepare necessary
equipment such as boots, raincoats...
Stork Island in Tien Nong Commune is a beautiful relic, one of the
destinations on the journey to explore Trieu Son land along with Nua Temple,
Am Tien... In the coming time, the commune will organize to mobilize
investment to promote the potential and advantages of the relic to put the
relic into developing tourism.
